MiR Fleet: assessment and use cases

Sites using several MiR robots with suitable top modules and handover equipment.

What is documented?

MiR documents centralized missions, shared site information, charging and waiting behaviour, and resource management for its fleet. REST interfaces support enterprise-system integration. [Source]

Why this assessment?

For a MiR fleet, the manufacturer’s software is a sensible baseline. Existing vehicles and workflows may not require an additional coordination platform. Another system becomes useful when it addresses a concrete missing capability or a planned cross-vendor requirement.

A capability matters when it solves a real problem in the intended operation. A function already covered elsewhere adds little, while one missing mandatory requirement can rule out an otherwise capable system.

Standalone mission planning and ERP connections

MiR describes a web interface for managing missions and presents ERP or warehouse-system integration as an option when expanding operations. Its product page documents a REST API for ERP, WMS and MES. [Source] [Source]

MiR Fleet should therefore not be described as inherently dependent on an ERP project. An operator-driven workflow can be a suitable starting point for a homogeneous fleet. A complete sensor- or button-driven process may also require configuration of top modules, equipment and interfaces.

Use the same transport when comparing it with a cross-vendor platform. Who chooses the destination, stores occupancy and releases the next order? These answers establish whether another process system is required or whether the proposed MiR solution already covers the flow.

REST, legacy applications and top modules

A REST API provides technical access; it does not mean every existing ERP can communicate without adaptation. For in-house systems, determine who translates the data, when an order is accepted and how completion or failure is reported.

The top module matters as much as the trip. Reaching a destination does not prove a conveyor transfer, lift action or cart exchange has finished. Feedback to the business system must represent the correct physical completion, otherwise inventory could be booked while the load is still on the robot.

Test these events separately. Let the robot arrive, refuse the handover initially and release it later. Inspect both MiR Fleet and the connected system: each should distinguish completed travel from completed transport.

Fleet decisions and shared resources

For an existing MiR fleet, first test whether this covers the required work. A broader brand-compatibility promise becomes relevant when additional manufacturers or missing functions are actually planned.

Make the nearest robot unsuitable during a demonstration, for example because of its module, load or operating state. Selection should not be judged on distance alone. Also test charging points and handover stations when several missions request the same resource, and observe how a changed station configuration reaches the fleet.

Distinguish MiR Fleet from Enterprise features

The product page attributes Windows Server deployment, centralized sign-in, user permissions and audit logging to MiR Fleet Enterprise. Confirm these against the proposed edition. [Source]

Do not transfer an Enterprise capability to every older installation without checking it. Establish the software edition, supported vehicle generations, version combinations and update procedure for the actual project.

For SMEs with suitable MiR vehicles, the manufacturer focus can make responsibilities easier to define. If the strategy includes other robot brands, interfaces to supervisory coordination become more important. The same manufacturer focus can therefore be a benefit or an integration question, depending on the planned fleet.

Limits of the assessment

Suitability for MiR vehicles does not establish suitability for an arbitrary mixed fleet. Top modules, handovers, peripheral equipment and version combinations remain part of the complete process.

This assessment uses manufacturer information and editorial analysis, not a controlled head-to-head product test. Confirm the vehicle, version and operating scope in the actual proposal.

Example decision scenario

Several MiR robots supply defined stations and need coordinated missions, charging and site data. The manufacturer’s controller should be evaluated as a complete candidate.

This is an illustrative procurement scenario, not a claimed customer deployment. It describes conditions worth testing rather than a result already achieved.

What should a demonstration establish?

Combine competing missions, an occupied destination and a low battery state. Check prioritization and recovery, then change a station and observe distribution of the update.

  • Agree the initial state and expected result before the test.
  • Record successful work and fault recovery separately.
  • Identify manual intervention and each participating system.
  • Confirm that the demonstrated functions are part of the offered scope.

Which alternatives should also be considered?

Compare the proposal with the current controller and with the alternative architecture suited to the planned fleet. A switch should close a real gap; an additional layer should have a clear responsibility.

Compare use cases and alternatives.

Evidence for the final decision
